Hunker down

February 12, 2008

We woke early to leave the park. The weather reports warned of a “significant weather event” as a front was building in the gulf. We thought it best to move to a place where we could still enjoy the area, even if it was raining. The wind was at our back as we drove around 200 miles and pulled into a full facility park near Sarasota. We were there by noon. The sky was already darkening and the wind increased. By 4 p.m. there were tornado warnings (general) but a ”tornado watch” was not issued for our area (a more specific warning that a tornado has been sighted in the area). Lightening (194 lightening strikes reported on the TV) and sheets of rain fell but we were safe and dry with TV and cell phone signal.

We will be here at least 3 days. If the weather is bad there are great museums in the area. When the weather improves, there are the beaches.

Our compass headings have been dominated by east and south for the trip so far. Today the compass indicated west then north. We have turned the corner. We are beginning our trip home.
I will go back and edit former blogs tonight, adding pictures to the narrative. A few pictures from yesterday displayed here.

The wildlife is unbelievable! Thank you for including all the pictures. I also like the bike trail--flat and easy to ride. I imagine the weather is a little hotter than here though.
